Designing for Access | YouTube ReDesign

A perfect design does not exist in a world of constantly evolving user needs, and even well-known apps can benefit from design improvements. Therefore, we provide design improvements to the well-known YouTube app.

The Problem

The YouTube algorithm and interface currently highlights large creators, making it difficult to empower small creators. It is also challenging to navigate through subscriptions due to the current list format of the UI and the lack of a recommendation system for this tab. Moreover, users who collect a sizable amount of subscriptions do not have comprehensive tools to manage their subscriptions. We further see potential in expanding the playlist feature on the app, that is currently hidden under the library tab.

Solutions

We address the highlighted problems with the following design improvements...

  • Inclusivity of small content creators through a filter button
  • Enhanced playlist features with added My Mix tab
  • Improved subscription tab layout with bubble icons and recommendation split screen
  • Comprehensive tools, such as filtering and select all, to manage subscriptions
  • Low Fidelity Prototypes
