Summary
As students navigate college and career choices, they often encounter overwhelming amounts of digital information. To address this problem, we developed Pathways, an interactive college and career exploration website designed to engage and assist students by simplifying their search process. The space-themed, interactive interface is meant to help users explore different career paths, discover potential majors, and identify schools that align with their interests and goals.
Methodology
Methods
- Literature Review | Explored various publications regarding interactive visualization systems, educational technologies, and career decision self-efficacy.
- Competitive Analysis | Conducted market research on other existing technology that addresses college and career exploration.
- Prototyping | Created low and high fidelity prototypes of system interface and conducted several design iterations before chosing the final interface.
- Stakeholder Research | While in development, presented system to individuals in the field of education to obtain feedback and implement changes in parallel for user-informed design.
- User Research | Led user studies with current undergraduate students, testing the usability of the Pathways website and creating a comparison to an existing competitor, College Board.
Designs
- Took inspiration from existing games that abstract categorical data.
- Created low-fidelity sketches on Procreate.
- Iterated through several design ideas before choosing the current space theme.
